• Looking for some help with making some decisions on a custom wheel build spoke count. I understand theres no definitive solution as it is weight and usage dependant. Can any body shed some light on why 28/28 builds on an alloy rim such as Kinlin xr22t seem less common, is this not a good middle ground between a 24/28 and 32/32 build? Thanks.

The sensible middle ground would be 24/32. That's a pretty close match for the typical 60/40 weight distribution, and handily biased to throw the surplus axial stiffness at the front wheel where it's felt most.
Our parents were not wrong when they defaulted to 32/40 rather than 36/36, and the demise of differential spoke counts on commodity bikes was not done for the benefit of users but for the convenience of factories.

  • By accident of hub availability, I ended up with two pairs of 20/32. Good to know that this isn’t that far from optimal!

  • Thanks for the reply. Seems I can get the 32/28 hubs that they have in stock for £65 less so probably answers my question aswell. Any notable differences in the XR22t vs XR26t aside from the obvious?
