Didnt know this was possible with carbon. I'll just keep an eye on it. Already riding a super thin 20 year old frame so whats a bit more risk :)

I don’t think they knew either! It’s just what they did with the first full carbon forks.

I found this with my Premium+ full carbon.
Same as you i was surprised to find it there but i've since heard the early forks had reinforced steerers to allow this to be done this safely. Not sure if this just means extra layup thickness. I've gently tapped mine down and used a shallow expanding bung but i think it would off been fine to use the star nut.

Send a tube the same diameter inside the carbon steerer that will reinforce it and fill that grove with a suitable filler should hold out
