    Flange PCD for true tangent spoking = cos (crossings/spoke holes × 720°) × ERD

    For a 400mm ERD and 32H 3X, the limiting flange pitch circle diameter is about 153mm

  • I suppose the real concern on a small wheel, with crossing spokes, is the angle at the rim leading to spokes breaking at the nipple.

    I suspect that's the reason Bromptons come with radial lacing on the front (radial is definetly a very bad idea on a cargo bike with disc brakes and all kinds of strange forces going through the front wheel).

    There's not really any way to reduce the angle at the rim significantly with spoke pattern, so I'd always build with chunky spokes. I haven't had any breakages on the front of my cargo bike with cheap Halo plain gauge spokes.
