We are surprised at that too, even with whippets they seem to have a very instant recognition. It might be due to shared traits as @danb said. Ball wise, no worries I end up retrieving my own ball regularly 😂

Our grey loves other greys, will sniff other dogs but mostly doesn't care much for them, even the smallest and fluffiest ones. Cats, squirrels and foxes are a different story.
When I throw a ball she runs the opposite direction. Lunatic.
