You guys have any advice for someone considering adopting a rescue greyhound? It's something that I've been looking into recently, love the breed and doing research but only ever owned labs before, so the temperament and excerise level is obviously a lot different.

Do they enjoy occasional longer walks?

Do either of you have experience bringing a rescue greyhound into a house with young kids (mine are 2 and 5)?

  • We settled on greyhounds because of temperament, which we loved as it is quite placid and doesn’t require tons of exercise. Having said that, we still walk Gary 3 times a day (short walks with a toilet break) and try to get them to run in the dog area (short runs with other dogs or fetch ball) 2/3 times a week (10/15 min max) to burn any hyper energy. He also loves coming with us to do chores or quiet pubs. Walk wise we have taken him to forest or country side walks for a morning or an afternoon (max 4 hours). But he his young (3 years) and has no race injuries that we know of. Just make sure you take enough water, and a coat or bandana if it hot as they have not much fat and therefore they get hot or cold much easily.
Kids wise. He is good with babies but not sure how he or the breed in general would react to children. But I can’t see a problem if the children understand that they need to be left to do their thing (sleep and lay around) if they are not feeling social. They are lovely animals but like a giant cat, they like to do their thing.
Rescue wise, not sure if you are close. But I would recommend going to visit Wimbledon Greyhound, they are a great community and they are happy to have you walk a dog for 20 min as often as you want (as they benefit from the socialisation and the exercise). They often have young families there and were great with us

Yeah, they can do longer walks but you might need to build up to them, especially if they are fresh off the track. My other half even takes ours on some of her runs, although Holly is a bit of a reluctant runner ( 2 speeds - lightspeed and walking).

We had our first two greyhounds (Milly and Caleb) a few years before our kids were born, so they grew up with them, when Caleb died 2 or so years ago we got Dylan a few months later and after Milly died last year we got Holly. All of them have been great with the kids although Holly got a bit spooked after the kids accidentally woke her up in the early days, so just common sense really.
The one thing you might find is that the rehoming org can be a bit wary of placing greyhounds with families with small children as they don't know how the dog will be with kids. It will likely help if you can show that the kids know how to behave sensibly around dogs (not hugging them and giving them space etc)

Happy to help with any questions and can recommend Forever Hounds trust as that's where all of our hounds have come from.
