Whoever told you water bottle spray is effective was having a laugh! I have actually tried it and can confirm it doesn't work. Nor does shining a light in their face, or throwing them food.
The best strategy is to ignore them!
Unless it is a downhill bit, they can all run faster than you can pedal
99+% of them want to play 'chase'. The faster you ride, the faster they will run to just not quite catch you.
<1% of them want to bite you - like the one that bit the first three finishers in TABR last year. In that case there is pretty much nothing you can do about it. If you stress that each dog that chases you could be the biter, you'll spend a lot of time stressing, as there are a lot of dogs!
