So the road that has raised the question has regular pedestrian crossings (non traffic light) but vehicles have to go considerably further.

Is that because of a one-way system? It would help if you could show us the location.

Sort of. It turns into a motorway via a rather complicated junction.
It's not really an ideal road, given that a motorway feeds on to it, so i might try route around it anyway but it raised the question.
