Race really is a long way away from some people's minds.
Some people have that privilege more than others. Which is fine if, when it is brought into focus for them, they're open to it. When white people say "I don't see race, so I'm above it.", which is quite a common defensive reaction, not so fine. Doesn't necessarily make them racist, usually does make them insensitive assholes.
There's been a significant section of British society who were very aware of her ethnicity right from the start and have been making her quite aware they're aware. For those with the luxury of not having to think about this kind of thing, realising that was their privilege would be a good way to start thinking about it.
Melvin Bragg once had a black American academic on one of his Radio 4 spots. She'd written something about why white middle class people saying "I'm colour blind" were dodging the argument and effectively supporting racism by refusing to see it. He completely lost it with her, barely let her finish a sentence, spent most of the show just attacking her. He clearly felt he was under attack. Revealed himself to be a total prick.
Ever since he made an appallingly stupid mistake, Danny Baker and some of his defenders have been flopping about somewhere in that territory.

Make that three. I had no idea either. Although I had no idea who she was and who she was married to either. I don’t really keep up with Royal news.
Who would have known Charles was married again? (Obviously not me) I thought the current lady was his girlfriend. (Notably I can't remember her name)

I've encountered two people who didn't know that Meghan Markle is mixed race during the course of the last days. The Danny Baker thing was the first they knew of it. Race really is a long way away from some people's minds.
