he changed his bike after that to one either with or without elliptical chain rings so must have lost his chain or had issues shifting. listening to the french commentary so missed a bit of it

I think that was the extent of it. Looked like he had a mechanical initially but I think he was just struggling to get on top of a big gear.
He’s going to get back in but he must have burnt some matches riding across.
Fuck passing cars with a 2ft gap on cobbles at 45kph.

What happened to Van Aert in Arenberg? It looked as though he went off the road but then couldn't get back up to speed again.
