Ah, so glad I'm not the only one who struggled. I had the same problems with poorly machines eyelets too. Can't face disassembly to fit washers though... it seems sturdy enough once it's on, how has yours held up?
It held up fine during a week of touring in France. That included some disassembly due to French train rules, which was a PITA as the ovalhead bolts are very soft and prone to rounding off. It's plenty sturdy but perhaps not for easy swapping around.
I got a matching rear rack because I am a glutton for punishment and matchy, matchy. Replacement bolts should arrive today.
What was the explanation? I know the SNCF doesn't allow recumbents, trailers or tandems, but I can't see why a rack would make the bike non "standard".
