You could try covering it with leather. I did it to a shell that someone sold on here and its still looking good ... (3?) years later. It might be a bit more of a pain not being able to remove the rails, but should still be manageable

Starting to look positively bike-shaped. Waiting for the parts to arrive, tyres will be 29x2.25 Racig Ralphs, brakes will be old stock Magura Louises I was able to snag up cheaply. Also need to take some acetone to the seatpost and sort out the saddle as I accidentally ordered a red one. I might sand the upper and paint the rest black and swap it out with the one on my everyday bike, as that one can be a bit ratty.
