Turns out they do this very same route (12000km in 4 months - fully supported) for just 16500$. (TDA actually stands for Tour D'Afrique)
More interestingly, they have all the 88 stages available on RWGPS. It appears to be mostly on main roads (what a main road looks like can vary significantly across a continent like Africa), with almost all the stops to be in organised campsites (again, the concept of "organised" may vary).
