Yep, regular testing. You’re right, one can fail to hit power.
Mentally draining is helpful but I’m fairly experienced at pacing my race efforts so I don’t feel like missing out. I’m sure it would be very helpful to lots of people though.
Having said that, hanging on until the end of an interval is not the same ruining yourself in a race.

You can also do 'breakthrough' workouts on a dumb trainer. When you're riding to RPE and make more power because you're feeling good. You're not riding to a limit you may have fixed too low.
ie. we're all doing regular FTP testing aren't we... are you setting arbitrary load values for those tests?
