I don't think people are offended, they're just not amused by your (if we're honest) unoriginal joke and probably don't have much patience left for jokes like that. If random strangers walked up to you every day and all made the exact same joke you would get fed up of it too.
Go and look at any article about veganism, scroll down to the comments and see how long it takes you to find a "joke" about bacon.
For you it's just one little joke but for the rest of us it's the same stuff we hear every day. Try to see it from the other perspective.
