  • This bike has proved to be a useful hack. Although it has no pretensions to speed it needs only minimal maintenance.

    Changes since the frame change mentioned above include 6 and 3/4" cranks instead of the 7" originally used. (175 mm to 170 mm). I don't like being fussy about this sort of thing, but I have found that, for me, the 6 and 3/4" is definitely more comfortable and efficient. I find it surprising that such a small difference matters, but there it is.

    The other major alteration has been to go to 700 rims instead of 26" x 1 and 1/4". This was done mostly because of the poor availability of the 26" kit, but there's no doubt that the modern rims and tyres are superior. It's noticeable that the slightly bigger rims actually fit the frame better than the size originally intended!
