Ok - all done. Went to see my friend with the vice, but didn't need it - just needed a stronger pair of hands than mine! Actually - he held the pivot sleeve in a pair of mole grips and turned the gear mech by hand. Maybe not the recommended method, but took less than a minute. Seager clip went on very easily.
