I think it'll only be a matter of time before they find evidence of very large settlements, not just villages, although it's probably unlikely that there will be much that was stone-built. Then again, there may be areas in the Amazon where stone was abundant.
And still the mystery about the causes ... epidemics/natural disasters/climate change? And when did population levels collapse or go down? Did early European expeditions introduce the pathogens that we know had such a devastating effect in Mesoamerica?
