From my uncle (a gardener) when a cousin asked about orchid upkeep in the family whatsapp group the other week:
"generally keep it in the middle of a room, larger the better, away from direct sun and draughty windoors/doors. Do NOT water with tapwater especially in London - even with softeners it could still contain chlorine/sulphates/nitrates etc. Boiled ok, filtered better, rainwater is better still and filtered rainwater is probably only better by being warmed to tepid (yes really). Our orchirds get watered in a sink where all the water can run out of the pot. Don't let it stand in water, ever. I water mine, leave it in the sink to drain completely, then replace. Re-potting will require more than a whatsapp message. Feed with compost 'fertiliser'. Occasional misting is good (rainforest plants etc) but remember no straight up tapwater."
