  • Right, this thread is intended as an incentive to have a clear out. I need a decent commuting / winter bike with mudguards and have enough parts to build up two bikes. I’m hoping by building and test riding both I can decide which to keep and which to sell. Plus will give me something to do on my lunch breaks while the weather’s rubbish

    Frames:

    1. A Principia RSL-AS. Picked this up recently . It is essentially an RSL with clearance for mudguards and slightly more relaxed geo. Came with a full carbon ITM fork with mudguard eyelets. Beautifully made anodised frame. Thought it looked a bit like a ti colour in the sellers photo (below) but it’s a rather uninspiring dirty gold/bronze.

    2. A Cannondale 3.0. Had this frame for sometime, it’s had a hard life often living outdoors. So much paint had bubbled up and flaked off I decided to get it resprayed some time ago and it’s just sat there . Planned to sell it after buying the Principia but after applying new decals it it turned out to look pretty good in a Matt RAL 5025. They forgot to do the forks so they don’t currently match! Interestingly It will just fit 35mm mudguards with some creative use of zip ties and axiom axle runners on the fork (frame has threaded mounts)

I’ve got a choice of 3 groupsets to use : Dura Ace 770 , a mixed bag Campag silver 9 speed group and 10 speed Rival in Black . Currently thinking all black Rival on the Cannondale and either DA or Campag on the Principia . DA seems a shame to use on a winter bike but it’s a little tatty and aging . Other components will be from parts bin or sourced to keep the cost down.
