I used to walk around the block reading a book.

Yeah, before being a smartphone zombie was cool.

This was in Oz though, where we can build flat concrete footpaths and don't fill every fucking street with shite to bump into.

That's no excuse for not being able to lay flat concrete. There's also huge paths around here, they're just covered in lamps, signs, A-boards, bins, hire bikes, other people, etc.
