Colombia’s appearance in World Cup finals have never been consistent, but they do play crowd pleasing football and their goal celebrations are well known. Their 5-0 victory against Argentina in 1994 qualifiers was met with national celebration and high hopes.

Household names today Carlos Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla, Willington Ortiz, Marcus Coll, but it was Rene Higuita signature goal line clearances and antics that all football fans will remember. 380 club appearances and 43 goals scored. 68 National appearances 3 goals

A nation mourned for Andres Escobar here in Colombia, a senseless killing at a time when Colombia played blistering style of football. The players of this generation must have felt that pain like losing any close family member.

In 2001 Colombia won the Copa America title for the first time. 2014 Colombia returned home from Brasil national heroes. But expectations are not so high for 2018 in Russia, but let’s hope it will be memorable for all the right reasons.

The National team used to play their home fixtures in Bogotá. But since 2001 FIFA have enforced a rule that they play on the coast to remove the home advantage at over 2500m above sea level. So the National Team now play in Barranquilla. This does not stop the team training at altitude though.

The local team is Club Atlético Junior de Barranquilla aka Los Tiburonesos the sharks.

  • From what I hear Asperilla must have a few offspings around the north east of England.
He acquired quite a taste for the geordie lass which made up for the weather in the UK. He said in an interview he still misses them.

  • If you can find it, the documentary 'The Two Escobars' is definitely worth a watch.
