You have PMCs right? They're on a whole other level!
My nearfields are decent enough (Focal CMS65) but I have them a bit further away now as I recently got some mixcubes and this is really highlighting the problem with the room. Focals are getting 'vibe' duties with critical stuff on the mixcubes but the nature of them means bass and top end is a bit of a guess, so I need to deal with the big holes at 90hz and 150hz. Some scatter panels should deal with the flutter echo too.

I do have 2 PMC systems at the moment in different rooms, it took 15 years to get there though! I just added the PMC Sub to my near field setup which is why I got into REW, to get it setup properly. I've spent years with tiny PMC's as a near field solution but never had a sub before mostly because of the expense. It makes a huge difference in that system though. Maybe adding a sub to yours would help.
The full range system has LB1's which I picked up second hand years ago before the prices started going up. I'm running them on PMC class D amps which came from the DB1sa's. The amps made a huge difference to the bass response on those.
I've got a couple of Dynaudio Air 20's in storage which I've been supposed to sell for years. They are big and heavy which is why I prefer the LB1's but the Air's have the flattest response.
It's taken me years to sort out the full range system, I've recently been through every component and ended up with something that works. One small thing I discovered is a 12" guitar amp has to be positioned very carefully otherwise it upsets the midrange balance of the mains at the listening point. I've never had a problem with echo as the room is small and the walls/floors are quite absorbent.
The PMC near field system is something I wish I'd had years ago, aside from the fact they didn't make the TwoTwo series then I was spending more money on drum machines and outboard, which these days is a luxury not a necessity with the software and processing power available. It's a worthwhile quest to sort out one system like that in a lifetime.

I have the same reservations about dsp but it's tough to get around the low frequency modes caused by the size of the room. Most of us are stuck with non acoustic parameters to work within, I feel fortunate just to get one listening position sorted.
For mixing near fields solve most of the problems for me, producing with instruments is a whole different battle.
