Agreed, accidents can happen any where and lane not necessarily safer.
I've done the A4 variation a few times and it's always been fine, even when fairly busy (from 8-9pm). It goes via a couple of TT courses so always interesting to find a bit of very familiar road.
One year I did the A404 past Marlow around midnight and that was not fun.
