  • I thought the results were interesting and far more convincing than I expected on initially seeing the BBC's 'FaceApp launches 'blackface' feature...' headline.

    I'm guessing the algorithm had been fed large sets of face images identified as 'Asian, Black, Caucasian and Indian'. Then found the closest few matches to the original image in each pile based on geometric position of facial features. Then morphed them together with the original.

    But that initial image pool selection would seem to be an exercise in stereotyping, almost by definition. Which is perhaps part of why the results were both convincing and controversial.
