I understand that front wheel aeroz are more important than rear but would you not normally have a deeper rear and shallower front for cross winds?

He probably feels better riding with a lighter wheel at the back, or just couldn't be bothered with matchy matchy.

Front makes more difference to aeroz, rear makes less. Maybe he decided not to bother spending £x00 on another wheel for (very) marginal gains? Smaller rim on the rear will save him a bit of weight, so it would make a very small difference.
