I think it's also meant to reduce chain slap, when you're riding over bumps and stuff. I run Apex 1x on my Wolverine and love it. In comparison to Ultegra 6700 on my road bike it has a much more affirmative click. The rear derailleur is quite long, and as a bonus for servicing has a little lock mechanism that you can engage. I can't say I am missing any gears really, and getting back on the road bike always always shows me that there is cognitive overhead with a double chain ring in front.
Thanks, that makes sense. I have Campy on my Condor and being able to move several gears at once on the rear shifter when I change the big ring is one of the reasons I'd been hanging on for a Campy disc brake system for ages. But the 1x system would solve that problem...
