It's for an audax/gravel bike that I'm planning. Mostly for road use, but with the expectation that I might end up on gravel/hardpack from time to time, particularly if I take it to South America.

Definitely worth looking into then: (modern) 1xn originated in the off-road world.

Yes, it seems well-suited. I was a bit sceptical about the difference in range, but that calculator is very handy indeed - I find it a lot easier to get my head around these things visually. So yes, I think I might go the 1x route.
