This right here. There's another more modest house in Hawick I've been looking at - house itself is perfect but Hawick is just closing down sign / shuttered shops and a few surviving charity shops and bookies. Coming from Brighton we're expecting a hit but...

The Wirral?
Close to Chester, Scoucerville and The Mancs. Easy road links, trains and airports.
Close to the Lakes and Welsh mountain ranges. Ireland is only over the water.
Some nice big houses but I'd get a good alarm / CCTV system to be on the safe side. A lot cheaper than Cheshire countryside though.

We looked fairly seriously (2 viewings, 1 overnight stay at a nearby hotel) at a 9-bed country house in Brandon near Thetford with view to setting up a B&B. It started at £750k and 12 months later, when we viewed it, it was hovering around £600k. Despite its potential, being on the river and a stone's throw from High Lodge - the HQ of Thetford Forest - a night and morning in Brandon made us run a mile.
