I think all 979s I've seen have got short near-vertical dropouts. You might just get away with it if you find the magic ratio as it might just have enough wiggle room to get chain tension. You'll be stuck with that ratio though.
Didn't he have to rebond the frame though as Vitus frames are glued. Do a whipskid and the frame separates on all points.
