This is what I ended up doing after reading it was best practice. Not sure why, but it seems to work ok.
Managed to lock myself out of the Pi somehow (!) and default password didn't work so I started from scratch. I've now got as far as getting VNC working on boot, and NZBget installed. I've also backed up the disk image so if I fuck it up again I won't lose all that progress. Now just want to get Sonarr and Couchpotato working on there too.

Don't set a static IP on the Pi. Let it DHCP, but set the router to always assign the same IP when it gets a DHCP request from your Pi's MAC address.
