Hydros are much more powerful than mechanical, and less fucking around with to get them working properly. For flat bars I can't see any reason to go mechanical, cheap shimanos are still 10 x better than high end mechanical. I've got spyres and my wife has BB7s on our commuter cross bikes and they're ok I suppose, but as soon as the 10sp hydro tiagra stuff comes out I'm hoping to switch to that.
