There's nothing unhealthy about drinking hard water, it's just some extra chalk, basically. The reason to reduce it is for the health of your kettle, not you. The scrunchy wire balls, I think, just have a lot of surface area compared with the inside of the kettle, so attract a proportionate amount of scale deposit, away from depositing on your kettle. I realise I'm a few pages behind...
