With respect to tv and radio, "news" is a cheap way to pad out the schedule.
Outlets have proliferated and broadcasting is now near constant... just as budgets have come under pressure.
Although nature abhors a vacuum, the meeja is replete with narcissists desperate to give you a "sense" of whatever happened sometime ago and is unlikely to change any time soon, ridiculous intonation and risible syntax at no extra charge.
Hence the elevation of "piss poor" Peston, Nick "the emphasis" Robinson and Evan "I look like a freshly hatched chick" Davis.
Pseudonymous twit-shit is quoted as a record of the fact; Facebook is a primary reference source; and if it wasn't captured on a grainy phone-cam, it didn't happen.
