Thanks for the comments, more thinking to do for me before I pull the trigger I think.
Partly I think I have never thought my calipers have not done what I need them to do, but most modern (carbon) roadbikes with clearance for decent sized tires and mudguards seem to come with discs now.
I have Cantis on my Mercian and they are frightening in the wet.
