Machines are basically weight lifting for dummies- your back etc is supported and the muscle group the machine works is isolated...
So long as you don't load up the machine too much too soon, you basically can't hurt yourself (unless you walk into one). Obviously, the benefits of the compound exercises/lifts you get from free weights are that it works a bunch of muscles in one go and builds core stability etc. Make sure you've got the form nailed though.
