  • Oh, I know what he means, of course. But I'm always fascinated by what happens when you pretend to be a bit obtuse (OK, so I don't really have to pretend) and take utterances literally. And 'lies and deception' are definitely part of the method he's criticising. What he means is obviously the constant repetition of a message, as he thinks it's very effective, but it is wrapped up with those unfortunate references to lies and deception.

    There's a serious background to this, especially in politics, as I think that many responses to utterances are informed, especially emotionally, by just such literal-ness.
