• Try and stay downtown - much more to do down there. Lots of nice spots on airbnb in the east Village / alphabet city / LES and Nolita. Almost unlimited great eating but 3 fun spots to try on varying budgets - Cafe Habana in Nolita (think it's on prince and Elizabeth) great cheap Cuban food and nice drinks, fun to hang out. Mid range Maialinos under the Grammercy Hotel in GP and cheaper sister restaurant Marta around the corner. Both great Italian food. Can get spends but not too bad. For a really serious goody treat - the set lunch at Le Bernadin in mid town is USD65 per head and worth every penny. All fish and sensational cooking. Oh and go to Katz on houston for the Pastrami obvs.

Music stuff downtown - you have Bowery ballroom, multi stage venue and Cake shop on the LES, both fun. If you like Jazz, Village Vanguard is a legend and has great music. My best recent discovery is Bill's place - basement of Bill Saxtons house on 133rd st in Harlem, he plays every night with his 4 piece and whatever guest turn up. Plays at 8 and 10, 20 bucks on the door and bring your own booze. (There's a liquor store around the corner) Genuinely amazing music and atmosphere.

Oh and citibikes are dead handy if the weather's ok. Take a ride around from Fulton St fish market all the way up to the far north upper west along the river, some lovely parks and sites along the way.

The Holland Bar on 9th Av in Hell's Kitchen is the diviest bar in the city. Go around 6 on a weekday evening if you fancy a laugh.
