Here is one of the better DIY ones I have seen made by a guy in Tasmania Aus using 6mm teflon (chopping board). It is 'connected over the top of the fork with another piece of teflon that continues to cover the caliper'
Cheap, light, strong. I'd almost pick it over my bonergaurd.
