• Ride the pimples today. Was awesome fun in the wet! Totally doable on sscx too (39/17) - had to get off and run (walk) up a couple of the climbs (mainly cudham) but don't think I would've been able to ride up it with gears anyway.

  • Need to try this route ASAP.

On other news, I tried to ride the south downs way this weekend.
Plan was to do Winchester > around Steyning on Saturday (80k),
bivvy bagging over night then to Eastbourne and then Brighton on Sunday (110k).
I left on Saturday afternoon thinking I had plenty of time to cover the first 80km.

    Terrible idea.

In that rain, the steep chalk climbs and descents were absolutely impossible to ride up or down, couldn't even push my bike as my feet wouldn't grip either.
When the light was vanishing and I still had 40km to go before camp, I slid and crashed one time too many and had to come at peace with the fact that I wouldn't make it.
Only in the train back to London did I realise how bruised up and bleeding I was.

Lesson learned, I'll come back in the dry. My legs and butt look like a galaxie.

That's brought back some unpleasant memories of trying to stay upright :-)

In the wet, that chalk can be lethal.

  • :/
Plan sounded like fun, I was jealous at the beginning of the story....

  • Funny - someone told me a similar tail just this weekend, except they ended up in a&e.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape
