I was thinking about doing something along these lines, but not with something that buts almost right up to the walls (amongst the reasons why are that I've had the god-damn thing plastered, so there), but possibly something that attaches to both ceiling points, which would give a pretty substantial platform for putting (commodity) light fixtures on, rather than spending a gazillion pounds on a "feature" lighting system.

Many! The hall is 11m long, 1.2m wide, 4 doors open into it as well as the front door and it's open at the far end into the kitchen/dining/living space.
Therefore it has no natural light of its own, so lighting will be very important.
I want it to be a gallery space, with lots of prints and paintings- so the main debate I am having is diffuse lighting vs. spots, or a combination thereof.
Walls will be painted high albedo white, floor will be parquet with a long rug in the centre.
