Sorry it wasn't my intention to recommend that route, but to point out that it is possible to avoid arterial major roads fairly easily (or not in my case!) I did it quickly and obviously carelessly, if you are going to cycle it, its worth taking time and consideration. And of course local knowledge is invaluable in the process :)
As i mentioned in my first post, I would avoid A roads altogether, 60mph traffic isn't my idea of fun :(

Although JT has shown what's possible with some google mapping, having ridden around Gloucs I'd be wary of recommending the A435,A436 and A417 through Gloucester - go more northerly on quiter backlanes.
