If i were you i would avoid all of the A roads, they are totally horrible. use google street view to see what the roads are like, would be easy enough to do it on lanes ( albeit slightly longer.)
On A roads cars are allowed to drive at national speed limit (60mph!)
The cycle pathway that you have mapped that runs along side of the A40 does look quite nice though.
