The A40 is fine when there's either a lot of traffic or no traffic at all. A bit like the north circular. It gets you to some places extremely quickly. The only issue is if you have thin tyres then you can really feel the metal connection joints on the flyover. I think they're there so the elevated bit can expand and contract accordingly. If you're not careful or go too slowly i'm sure they can take you off the bike.
