I used it a lot for cycling the US West Coast and actually stayed with some really lovely people, in some pretty cool places that I wouldn't have stayed otherwise, got shown lots of great stuff, taken out for lots of dinners and generally had lots of fun!
Certainly much better than couch surfing, as cycle tourist are generally a pretty nice bunch - like beer, good food, coffee, liberal politics etc. And they know what you want when you arrive - shower, cold drink, lots and lots of food.
The only people I found a little odd were some of the ones who did it all the time - kind of made you feel like their hobby... major caveat to that was that some people who I stayed with, who hosted a lot were also some of the nicest.
