In my extremely limited experience I found it fairly easy to move up by reading ahead – look over people, up the road and just be attentive to the timing of surges at the front (for example: this fella's being caught, things will slow, then go again so I'll thread up the group here in that window) and less about reacting to the wheel immediately in front.
