Ok, so I made a rookie error. Looks like the fork has been replaced (?) at some point and I didn't think to check it assuming it was english given it was an 80s holdsworth... It's got a flat filed edge to it which sheldonbrown's website tells me the thread is French. Can anyone make any recommendations based on that?
Shame really as the campy record headset looked lovely out of the box!
