  • Both bikes seem reasonable quality to me. What kind of riding are you planning to do?

I would rate the Dawes Galaxy as a better buy on the basis its made with Reynolds 531 super touriste which is a heavier duty, but decent quality frame material. It also has every braze on you might need. I am pretty sure you could tour round the world on the Dawes if you wanted to.

The down side to the Dawes is that there is very little of the equipment from your mercian you could transfer across. the rear wheel is the wrong OLN and you would need different brakes and brake levers. probably a different seatpost as well.

The Claude Butler on the other hand - I am presuming it is standard 531 tubing. Nothing wrong with that but equally no bonus points. On the positive side, the description states the bike is a ten speed, which should mean the OLN is 120mm, the same as your current wheels. So you could transfer pretty much everything across from the Mercian.

Final thought, the two bikes are different size, one is 19.5" seattube and one is 21" - which one will fit you best?
