I have experience with colouring titanium. The colour comes purely from heating it in air. Different temperatures will yield different colours. What you see is a mixed layer of titanium nitrides / oxides / carbides, and the different proportions give different colours I believe. If you heat the titanium in pure nitrogen, rather than air, it'll go $$GOLD$$.
