I dare say you're not short of advice from more qualified sources, but a tip (from an ultra-randonneur) which has stood me in good stead on multi-day events, is to eat *immediately *you stop.
Not once you've cleaned the chain, got changed etc, but as soon as the pedals stop turning. Doesn't need to be much, just keep an extra bar, sarnie etc in your pocket.
