  • As you may possibly remember, my attempt to rebuild a New Hudson roadster ended in failure. The NH was intended as a tourer, and I actually need a machine for this purpose. Although I had intended to use a rod braked roadster, since I could not find a suitable frame I decided to rebuild this Sunbeam, which even though it originally left the bike shop in 1940 certainly has some characteristics of an earlier machine.

This frame is part of my own patrimony - it was my Dad's. My first riding was done with him using this machine. Sadly I only have the frame - all the original kit has been scattered to the four winds, but to look on the bright side the original components were not wonderful quality and I think the end result will be much improved under my management compared with how it was in his day. In general I will try to use parts that are more or less suitable for the period, but I will have to temper this with practicality - I am intending to do some fairly hard riding on it.

There is another attraction for me in using this frame: I have my Dad's diary which gives the route of a Youth Hostel trip he did with me in 1957 (I was just twelve at the time). I'm intending to retrace some of this.

    Here's the frame:

I expect progess to be fairly rapid as I have pretty much everything 'in stock'.

If anyone's interested I will post again with progress reports.
